Brief
For this project, we were given a location in the heart of Lincoln on the high street. - The brief was to develop an existing site into a bespoke tailor.
The aim of the project was to understand the process of production in relation to the private and public space in commercial building. The project used the process of production as it's main driver creating a building as a construct ruled by the process of suit making.
Location:
Site High Street:
The site is located the bottom of the High Steet near to the train track. The tailor shop will help to beidge the divide between both sides of the track.
Concept:
To understand the process of making a suit I have looked at each step individually. Then by tracing each scene I began deconstructing each image and picked out the most predominent shape in them.
Design Process:
Below shows the merged shapes the from suit making process. By overlapping all of the chosen shapes I was able to create a composition that illustrates the process of suit making in one image.
Design Process + Context:
I decided to reposition my building back into the original empty space this would allow my building to firstly have a place to breathe without being overcrowded by other commercial buildings and secondly be a link between the university and highstreet.
Design Process Initial Plan:
The bottom floor has a glass facade which invites customers to enter. Whereas the two upper floors are windowless, this adds to the mystery and encourages the client to walk around and explore the store.
Transcripts Creation:
I looked at my transcripts from a different perspective and have 3d modeled my transcripts them cut them similarly to the way fabric would be cut to make a suit.
Transcripts Insertion:
By putting my transcripts inside my building I was able to understand how the shapes will inform the interior
Transcripts Conversion:
After exploring 3 dimensionality of my transcripts I formed them back into 2d to experiment with more refined shapes for plan.
Transcripts Implementation:
I layered my transcription over the top of my developed place to locate any shapes that intersect the interior which could then be used as supporting columns.
Transcripts Extraction:
These were the shapes that I have taken out of my transcriptions so they don’t obstruct the working space.
Transcripts Rationalisation:
To make the interior more dynamic, especially the working and fitting spaces, I continued to layer shapes from the transcripts.
Master Plan:
